Aquavit
Aquavit, which originates from Scandinavia, is a high-proof spirit. It is made from grain and potatoes, from which pure neutral alcohol is extracted. Depending on the recipe, after distillation the spirit is mainly flavoured with caraway, but also with other herbs and spices such as dill, fennel, coriander, cinnamon and cloves. The subsequent maturation takes place in wooden casks or stainless-steel tanks, much like whisky. The spirit is then diluted to drinking strength and bottled. The first mention of the so-called caraway schnapps Aquavit (then known as Akvavit) dates back to the year 1531. At that time, it was believed to possess healing powers, which quickly made the schnapps popular and much loved. Aquavit – also known as ‘water of life’ – is traditionally served ice-cold in a small schnapps glass or a glass similar to that used for grappa.

With Arvesølvet Aquavit, the Norwegian distillery Det Norske Brenneri aims to create a legacy. Crafted with natural ingredients and based on a Norwegian potato spirit, this authentically Norwegian aquavit draws its ingredients from picturesque valleys, rugged cliffs, and crystal-clear mountain streams. It matures for 6 to 12 months in the finest ex-sherry casks from Spain. The nose is treated to the seductive aromas of oranges, plums, and citrus oils, followed by delightful notes of fresh grapefruit, cumin, cardamom, coriander, star anise, and vanilla.
