Creag Dhu
Whisky and Moor: Creag Dhu is an exceptional single malt whisky from the renowned Speyside region, with strong links to nature, the mountains and the conservation of peat bogs – the Earth’s largest natural carbon sinks. The name ‘Creag Dhu’ comes from an iconic mountain in the Scottish Highlands, near the source of the River Spey. This mountain, which historically served as a refuge for Bonnie Prince Charlie after the Battle of Culloden, has a long history of illicit distilling.
The makers of Creag Dhu rely on traditional Scottish whisky distilling techniques to produce the finest Speyside single malt. The quality of the whisky begins with the selection of the finest barley and yeast, followed by traditional mashing and distillation processes. The whisky is matured for at least eight years in special casks, with European oak casks – previously used to store high-quality sherry – playing a key role. These casks are hand-toasted and charred, imparting notes of vanilla, caramel and fruit to the whisky. The toasting and charring process intensifies the flavour and ensures a distinctive smoothness as well as a long, full-bodied mouthfeel.
However, Creag Dhu also pursues an important goal beyond the enjoyment of whisky: the restoration of peatlands. Protecting the planet and sequestering carbon are essential components of the brand’s philosophy. Every bottle sold supports peatland restoration projects, which actively help to combat global warming. Creag Dhu is therefore not only an outstanding whisky, but also an investment in environmental conservation projects that preserve the planet for future generations.
