Trinidad Distillers Limited in Trinidad has stood for precise Caribbean distilling for decades. Between sea breezes and tropical warmth, rums mature here that unite craftsmanship and origin. The Zaya Gran Reserva embodies this philosophy as the flagship of the distillery. Its production follows a clear concept: Selected molasses is carefully fermented and then distilled multiple times before a blend of three to five rums is created. Each component matures for at least twelve years in American white oak barrels, mostly ex-bourbon barrels, which impart velvety vanilla and subtle roasted aromas. This results in a depth that is neither harsh nor overly intense. On the nose, lush notes of vanilla, caramel, and jam unfold, followed by dried banana, marzipan, and a hint of pipe tobacco. On the palate, it is full-bodied, smooth, and rounded, with hints of ripe fruit, wood, cocoa, and a delicate veil of spice. The aftertaste is warm, long, and elegant. It is best enjoyed neat at room temperature; a single large ice cube accentuates the creamy sweetness and brings out the spices clearly.
