Bonal

The Bonal Distillery is a long-established distillery in the French Alps, renowned for its exceptional liqueurs and spirits. Founded in 1865 by Félix Bonal, the distillery became famous for its unique gentian liqueur, which is made from a blend of gentian roots, herbs and spices. Bonal is particularly prized in the Savoie region and beyond for its herbal liqueurs, which can be enjoyed both neat and as an ingredient in cocktails.

Bonal liqueur is characterised by its intense, earthy aromas of gentian root, combined with a pleasant bitterness and fresh herbal notes. This balance of sweetness and bitterness makes it a popular choice for mixed drinks and as a digestif. Bonal Gentiane-Quina, for example, combines gentian with quina (cinchona bark), giving the liqueur a delicate yet complex character.

Since 1865, this spicy, earthy aperitif from the Bonal distillery—known as "ouvre l'appétit"—has been the key to stimulating the appetite. Taken seriously in its role as an aperitif and later popular with athletes, Bonal became an early sponsor of the Tour de France. It is made by infusing gentian, cinchona bark, and familiar herbs from the Grande Chartreuse mountains into a lightly sweetened spirit. While traditionally enjoyed neat as a shot, it also mixes beautifully with cider, sparkling wine, and Scotch or American whiskey. It pairs wonderfully with hard, salty cheeses, salted nuts, or earthy, spicy foods. It is also recommended as a substitute for sweet red vermouth.
