Smoky Irish whiskey was once an integral part of the Donegal region—and Ardara’s 2026 Edition draws directly on this nearly lost tradition. It is based on heavily peated malt processed using the “All Grain In” method; the whiskey is then triple-distilled. After distillation, it first rests for 72 hours in 6,000-liter solera vats before being transferred to barrels. The barrel blend for the 2026 Edition consists of 63% Oloroso sherry, 35.7% bourbon, and 1.3% virgin oak. At 46% ABV, this bottling is approachable and well-balanced, without losing sight of the typical Ardara smokiness. On the nose, sweet, fruity, and nutty notes blend with a slightly waxy tone and subtle pipe smoke. On the palate, warm beignets and poached pear give way to toasted coconut, almond, leather, and rolled tobacco. Sweet smoke and campfire notes lead into a long finish with baked apple. Thus, the 2026 Edition showcases the softer, more balanced side of the heavily peated Ardara style. Served neat, the interplay of fruit, sweetness, and smoke is particularly well-revealed.
