Izarra is a time-honored liqueur brand from the French Basque Country, with a history dating back to 1906. At that time, pharmacist Joseph Grattau developed a special recipe in Hendaye using regional herbs, spices, and plants. The name Izarra means “star” in Basque and remains closely linked to the brand’s origins to this day. For Izarra Jaune, select botanicals are processed and blended into a complex composition through careful maceration and classic distillation. Alcohol and Armagnac are used in the process, before acacia honey from the Basque Country rounds out the recipe and adds a gentle sweetness. On the nose, this yellow liqueur unfolds a spicy and multi-layered bouquet with notes of cinnamon, coriander, aromatic herbs, and a hint of anise. On the palate, spicy and herbal accents take center stage, accompanied by a mild honey note that lends the profile balance and added depth. The finish harmoniously carries forward the herbal, spicy, and honey aromas. Served neat, on the rocks, or with ginger ale as “Izarra Ginger,” Izarra Jaune showcases its distinctive Basque style.
