The Louis Couderc distillery, founded in 1908 in Aurillac in the heart of the Cantal region, has been a guarantor of authentic liqueur tradition for generations. Using artisanal skill and select regional ingredients, they create specialties that reflect the terroir of the Auvergne. For the La Fourche du Diable liqueur, fresh gentian roots are macerated for three to four months in a carefully monitored process. During this time, the distinctively tart notes of the root combine with the peels of oranges, grapefruits, and lemons, giving the distillate its unmistakable freshness. Even the aroma reveals delicate citrus notes reminiscent of sun-ripened fruit. On the palate, a pronounced, elegant bitterness unfolds first, followed by vibrant citrus freshness. Grapefruit and lemon add finesse, while the orange contributes a subtle sweetness, maintaining balance. The finish is long, clean, and pleasantly smooth compared to other gentian liqueurs. Its character is particularly evident when enjoyed chilled neat or served with a splash of tonic as a refreshing aperitif.
