The Montebello distillery on Guadeloupe has been synonymous with distinctive Rhum Agricole since 1930, crafted from fresh sugarcane juice with meticulous precision. The Zenga Gold Edition 2021/2023 is a cask-strength Rhum Agricole made from yellow and red sugarcane varieties, bottled as Brut de Fut without reduction. Matured from July 2021 in first-fill casks previously holding rye and Tennessee whiskey, it was bottled in limited quantities in January 2023, resulting in a particularly intense and authentic cask character. In the glass, it displays a brilliant gold hue with vibrant brilliance. The nose reveals distinct notes of sour cherry and sweet confectionery, lending it an alluring fruitiness. On the palate, it is powerful and structured, with pronounced red fruit flavors and a gourmand depth, accompanied by a striking, substantial texture. The finish is long, intense, and expressive with a lingering fruitiness. This rum is particularly impressive when served neat at room temperature, given sufficient time to open up in the glass.
