The Bodega Viña Elena distillery in Jumilla, Murcia, is a family-run business with roots dating back to 1948 and is now managed by the third and fourth generations. Here, traditional craftsmanship meets modern winemaking expertise and regional character. For their Vermucho, the white Airén grape variety is gently pressed, the must is fermented under temperature control, and then aged for six months in French oak barrels that previously held Monastrell wine. With select Mediterranean botanicals, local herbs, and roots, a complex and balanced recipe is created through careful maceration. In the glass, the Vermucho shines with a warm amber hue. The nose reveals anise, herbs, and delicate citrus notes; on the palate, a silky texture unfolds, along with subtle sweetness, a delicate bitterness, and aromas of orange peel, Mediterranean herbs, and subtle spices. The finish is elegant and lingering. Its balance between sweetness and bitterness makes it a versatile pairing for tapas and aged cheeses. Served slightly chilled on ice with a slice of orange, Vermucho unfolds its full aroma and is suitable as an aperitif as well as a base for classic cocktails such as the Negroni.
