Tradition holds that the first sugarcane plants on Madeira originated in Sicily. Thanks to Madeira's favorable climate, William Hinton established a sugar factory and distillery there in 1845. Over time, this became one of the largest on the island. Unfortunately, the distillery had to cease production in 1986. In 2006, William Hinton's heirs revived the production of high-quality rums. This William Hinton Rum Limited Edition 6YO Aged in Portuguese Fortified Wine Cask is made from a rum aged for six years in French oak barrels, blended with a 25-year-old rum from old stocks. The blend rested for a further three years before being transferred to a former (single cask) Portuguese wine cask for a final nine-month maturation period. The result is a smooth and well-balanced flavor profile. The nose and palate detect sweet notes of vanilla, caramel, dried fruit, and spices. A hint of light sweetness emerges during the long, pleasant finish. This delicious rarity was bottled in a limited edition of only 252 bottles.
