Martinique is a volcanic island in the Caribbean of rugged natural beauty. It belongs to the Lesser Antilles, lies between St. Lucia and Guadeloupe, and is around 440 kilometers from the South American mainland. The island is part of France and therefore also part of the European Union. It has a distinctive culture that blends French and West Indian influences, with cheerful people, idyllic villages and breathtaking nature. Martinique, known for its fertile soil and ideal climate for growing sugar cane, offers perfect conditions for producing premium rum. The sugar cane benefits from exceptionally high levels of sunshine and, as a result, has one of the highest sugar contents around –outstanding qualities that give the rum its unique character.
In November 2022, a new distillery was founded in Le Marin, in the south of Martinique, on the grounds of Habitation Grand Fonds: Braud & Quennesson, named after the engineers Charles-Jean Braud and Joseph Quennesson, who had already built a sugar factory there back in 1866 – one that unfortunately had to close in 1970 during the sugar crisis. Since its founding, Distillerie Braud & Quennesson has made full use of Martinique's natural advantages, combining traditional methods with modern production techniques to maximize the quality of its rums. The finest sugar cane is sustainably grown on the company's own plantations, monitored and then selected to ensure that only the best raw materials are used. Every step, from the careful harvesting of the sugar cane to gentle fermentation, is carried out with the greatest respect for nature. Stéphanie Dufour, the company's valued cellar master, oversees the entire process to ensure the aromas and essence of the sugar cane are preserved, reflected in the impressive, authentic rhums agricoles of Braud & Quennesson. In the meantime, the distillery has already received numerous awards for its high-quality rums. Its first-class products are appreciated by rum lovers worldwide and contribute to Martinique's reputation as an outstanding rum-producing region. Braud & Quennesson also plays an important cultural and economic role on Martinique, as the company is a popular destination for tourists who want to tour the distillery, learn more about the production process, and take part in tastings. Maison Braud & Quennesson is an outstanding example of the rich tradition and high quality of rum production on Martinique.
