Gold of Mauritius
The dream island of Mauritius lies in the Indian Ocean, roughly 2,400 kilometers off the east coast of Africa, and was originally discovered by the Portuguese. In the 18th century it became French, before being occupied by the British. Mauritius did not gain its independence until 1968.
Sugar was the island's only industry at the time of independence, which was, at the time, investing in other sectors such as tourism, textiles, and so on – but rum had already been part of island culture for many years. The island's eventful history and the various influences of distillation techniques and rum production methods have contributed to the rich rums of Mauritius becoming so highly regarded internationally over time. To this day, however, there is no uniform regulation on the island for the production, blending, or aging of rum.
The rum brand Gold of Mauritius is produced on the island at the Litchquor distillery in the Pamplemousses district. The name Litchquor is a play on words combining litchi and liqueur, referring back to the era when moonshine spirits made from sugar cane were mixed with local fruits. The Litchquor company processes only the finest rums on the island. From these, the premium rum Gold of Mauritius is blended, carrying the spirit of the entire island within it and paying tribute to its breathtaking beauty. The mastermind, founder and master blender of Litchquor is Frederic Bestel, born in 1971, a Mauritian citizen. He traveled the world for many years, gathering key insider knowledge of the wine and spirits industry, visiting wineries and distilleries, mainly in South Africa, and looks back on 20 years of blending experience. Frederic was determined to put Mauritius at the heart of his work and created the Gold of Mauritius brand as his "Mauritian" identity. When making his rum, he combines rums with different influences: The base material, molasses, always comes 100% from Mauritius. The production methods are based on techniques from Central and South America, and the barrels used for aging come from South Africa. This combination, together with Frederic's professional blending, gives the Gold of Mauritius rums their unique flavor profiles. And hardly any other rum captures the taste of a paradise island with its tropical fruits, a cool breeze, sun, beach and turquoise sea quite as well as the premium Gold of Mauritius rums.
The Gold of Mauritius range includes three dark rums: The Classic is a young rum with multi-layered aromas, yet very stable and full-bodied. The Solera 5 has a somewhat longer aging phase and edges closer to the aromas of a whisky. Solera 8 has more body, is stronger, and leans more towards a bourbon. We'd like to draw particular attention to two Gold of Mauritius editions here: Gold of Mauritius Emerald Edition is a successful blend of 5-year-old rums from various barrels. After aging, the rum reaches its harmonious and aromatic flavor profile. It reveals a beautifully matured whisky-like signature that underscores notes of malt and nuts. Gold of Mauritius Black 48 Edition rum impresses with powerful aromas of roasted nuts, plums and bananas, which are further intensified by its 48% alcohol content.
